MDG Screens

In September 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, 189 countries adopted the Millennium Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to work towards poverty eradication and sustainable development across the globe. The contents of the Declaration have been incorporated into eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with very specific indicators to monitor the achievement of each goal, and with a particular focus on the efforts and strategies of donors, civil society and the governments of least developed countries.

But what is the Southern view of these eight goals? The project "Screens – Southern Visions of the Millennium Development Goals" has emerged from the observation that interpretation and analysis of "development" and of the MDGs rarely take account of the views of the South. It is in our interest to consider reports, interpretations, and viewpoints emerging from African countries, and to view these not only as the sending-countries of international migrants, but also as centres for the production of research, culture and information. This can also help us to promote more effective decentralised cooperation and development, as well as to increase awareness of the "public support for the MDGs".

The term “Screens” is a metaphor for the need to consider the “views” of the Millennium Development Goals emanating from the southern hemisphere, while also alluding to the “multimedia” nature of the materials included in the project.
